Timeline: September 2022 - April 2023
Project Overview & Concept
Log Off was designed for my thesis project, where I was given a full semester to research and narrow down a question to focus on, and another semester to design a solution/product.
My final research question for this project was:
How has the use of social media negatively impacted the lives of those living with anxiety?
Scholarly Findings
-
There are many side effects that come along with the use of social media, the main one is anxiety but there is also depression, FOMO, social comparisons, isolation, body image issues, etc.
-
By looking at the connections we can see how social media is really affecting us and what we can do to navigate ourselves better/more effectively throughout the platforms.
User-centred
The user for my journal is someone who actively uses social media and has seen its impacts on their own mental health. Social media is so heavily integrated into our daily lives, that it has had an impact on everyone's mental health in one way or another.
I chose this topic because I see how easily addicted we can get to social media and how it has such negative effects on people's lives. Many of us are aware that social media platforms can be a negative and toxic place but what is it really doing to us and how is it pushing us more into a negative mental state?
Through my research and findings, I could see that the general problem was that many people struggle with mental health, especially related to social media. This is where I created Log Off.
Log Off is a social media detox journal, where users can "log off" from social media and take a break. This journal contains a variety of ways you can relax, de-stress, and step away from the online world. It is the Ultimate guide to unplugging and recharging with activities, colouring pages, educational pieces, stickers and more! Educate yourself while reflecting and doing some
self-discovery.
Conclusion
Increased self-awareness: You become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. By documenting your social media use and how it affects you, can allow you to notice patterns or triggers that impact your mental health.
Mindfulness: Writing in a journal requires you to be present in the moment. This mindfulness practice can help reduce stress and anxiety, and increase feelings of calm.
Keeping a social media journal can help users gain insight into their social media use and its impact on their mental health. By becoming more mindful and intentional about social media habits, it may be able to improve your overall mental health.
Increased creativity: A break from social media can free up time and mental space for other activities, such as writing, and making art/drawing. Engaging in these creative pursuits can be a positive outlet for stress and anxiety.
Overall keeping a social media journal can help you gain more insight into your social media use and its impact on your mental health. By becoming more mindful and intentional about your social media habits, you may be able to improve your overall mental health.
